Web 1.0 Website evaluation

Evaluating 1.0 Websites

Hello, welcome back to my blog. Today we will be evaluating some 1.0 websites on the topic of climate change.  Here we will use some of these websites to prepare lessons for our classes. The sites that we are going to evaluate are the following:

National Geographic
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/06/see-the-drastic-toll-climate-change-is-taking-on-our-oceans/

Accuracy: This article was presented by the prestigious National Geographic Society, which is in charge of funding work in the areas of science, exploration, conservation, and education.
Currency: This article was published on June 7, 2019.
Content: The site presents graphics and texts that are easy to understand and navigate
Functionality: The site is updated regularly, it runs fast and the links work properly.


Greenpeace.org

Accuracy: Greenpeace is a non-governmental organization focused on addressing international environmental issues by non-violent means.
Currency: The article was published on June 11, 2019.
Content: The article is long but includes lots of information and graphics to make it easy to read. It also includes all the references in the Endnotes.
Functionality: The website loads fast and it's readable even with a slow internet connection.


Climate Reality Project

Accuracy: Al Gore, former vice-President of the USA and winner of the Nobel peace prize founded The Climate Reality Project, which looks forward to raising awareness about climate change.
Currency: This article was published on June 7, 2018.
Content: The article is short and shows easy to understand points as well as images.
Functionality: The site works well and all the links work properly.


National Geographic Youtube channel

Accuracy: This video was uploaded by the official National Geographic youtube channel.
Currency: The video was uploaded on December 11, 2017. The channel is consistently updated.
Content: The video can come up as harsh and shocking but it shows the crude reality of the world.
Functionality: The site has ads and it can go slow with a bad internet connection, but it can be downloaded to play it off-line.


Nasa Climate Kids

Accuracy: This website is part of the NASA agency from the USA in charge of the space programs in the country.
Currency: The webpage was last updated on June 10, 2019, and is constantly updated.
Content: Taken from the "About us page": Targeting upper-elementary-aged children, the site is full of games, activities, and articles that make climate science accessible and engaging. On the website, kids, parents, and teachers can explore the differences between weather and climate, learn about how to keep our oceans healthy—and even how to make s'mores using the power of the Sun's rays.

Functionality: The site is very user-friendly and constantly updates but could present problems with a slow internet connection


Youtube (Climate change according to a kid)

Accuracy: This video was uploaded by Rappler official youtube channel. Rappler is a Philipino social news network which aims to inspire actions for social change.
Currency: The video was published on September 29, 2015, but the Channel is constantly producing new content.
Content: The video is engaging and it shows a different perspective to the kids, the eyes and voice of another kid.
Functionality: The site has ads and it can go slow with a bad internet connection, but it can be downloaded to play it off-line.


One world


Accuracy: "OneWorld is a non-profit organization with a mission to innovate internet and mobile phone applications that the world's poorest people can use to improve their life chances, and that help people everywhere understand and act on global problems."
Currency: The site was last updated on June 2019 and all the info is up to date
Content: It is extremely user-friendly, easy to read and with understandable graphics.
Functionality: The site runs fast and has lots of links with information, allof which work perfectly.


C2es.org


Accuracy: The Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) is the successor to the Pew Center on Global Climate Change and its mission is "to advance strong policy and action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote clean energy, and strengthen resilience to climate impacts."

Currency: The website is up to date
Content: The article is a bit long but not too much and it has images to help visualize what is written.
Functionality: The site runs fast and doesn't have ads.
